As the information on Maintenance Optimizer (MOPZ) is straight forward,
I am posting this reply from the SMP.
Maintenance Optimizer
The flexibility of SAP applications has lead to a considerable increase in the number of software components that are used by individual customers and can be installed centrally on one server or distributed over multiple servers. For example SAP ERP 2005 contains more that 50 different software components. To efficiently manage the resulting combinations, professional support is necessary.
To date, customers selected the relevant maintenance updates from an unfiltered list of software packages in the SAP Service Marketplace and downloaded them. Then the customer had to import the patches into the development system, test them in the quality assurance system and finally release the patches to the production system. These steps are now simplified by the SAP Solution Manager, thus the customer can always have an overview of the maintenance activities in all systems and solutions.
All corrective software packages, including Support Packages (Stacks) for SAP NetWeaver 2004s and subsequent versions, as well as all applications which are based on this software (including SAP Business Suite 2005), released after April 2, 2007, will be available exclusively through the Maintenance Optimizer in SAP Solution Manager.
Optimized Maintenance Procedure
As a part of the SAP Solution Manager, the Maintenance Optimizer offers a comprehensive procedure for software maintenance, including:
1. The Maintenance Optimizer shows relevant maintenance files for the customer's solution.
2. The customer selects the required packages and approves the download of the maintenance files.
3. The customer downloads the software.
4. The customer imports the software (furthermore uses familiar tools such as SPAM, SAINT,...).
5. The customer closes the maintenance procedure.

* Press Release from July 25th, 2006.
* Customer letter was sent to all customers early 2007.
* The Maintenance Optimizer is available as of January 2007.
* Maintenance Optimizer will be the ONLY source for maintenance files released after April 2, 2007 .
* Maintenance Optimizer is being further enhanced in 2007. Planned stages of extension comprise:
Automatic delta calculation and integration into Change Request Management.
Activating the Maintenance Optimizer
To use the new software download function in the SAP Solution Manager, the following activities must be performed:
1. Install the SAP Solution Manager
2. Connect the systems to the SAP Solution Manager
3. Connect the SAP Solution Manager to SAP
4. Download the Support Package containing the extension for the Maintenance Optimizer
For SAP NetWeaver 2004s and applications based on this software, the first three steps are performed as part of the installation or upgrade project. Therefore, the customer only has to perform the fourth step. As a result, the Maintenance Optimizer is activated and ready for use.
