patch and plugin

can any one say the difference between patch and add-on or plug in? why do we actually apply patch? why we apply add-ons?

patch is like debugging the existing components or updating the existing components....example: like updating basis or abap patch level
addon or plugin is like adding a new component to the existing sap server...... example : adding components like IS-Retail, IS-Oil.....etc
