Domain Name Change

Posted:
by mahendra
Hi..

Our IT department has a migration project that will require a domain name change (hostname.domain_name.com) that will affect all of our SAP systems.

How can we perform this task in an expeditious manner or what is the Best Practice for this activity? What tools can be used to change the domain name within SAP?

Regards,
Mahendra

I have done a real time domain rename in a company with 2500 users.
This should automatically affect all the servers which are a part of the domain.
Please let me know if you require further information about domain rename.
Remember..............Domain rename is not an easier process and I personally don't recommend in a real time environment.

Hi,

I have used the following document to do the domain rename procedure.

download.microsoft.com/download/c/f/c/cfcbff04-97ca-4fca-9e8c-3a9c90a2a2e2/Domain-Rename-Procedure.doc

I would suggest you to do the following before you do a domain rename.

VERY VERY IMP: READ THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT AND MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

Please let me know if you need and help

Regards

Raj

Hi Mahendra,

Once you read the domain rename documentation, you will come to a conclusion that all the other servers in a domain will change their domain name .
This is done by the Primary Domain Controller. No matter what the server is. If the server is an R3 server, you will need to restart the machine and that should affect the new domain name. However, this is not everthing. Once, the R3 server is back up and running, you will need to go to services.msc and change the domain name under which the respective R3, Orcale, SAP services have to run. I have done in an enviroment where I did not have R3 server. Hence, I am really not so sure if this is enough in an R3 architecture.
