Difference between Roles and Profiles

Can anyone clearly explain wht's t exact and clear definition and differnce between the Role and the profile. List out t scenarios also.

When you create role automatically profiels will be generated.

before sapR3 4.7 we used profiles ..
we have to assign profiles to the users in those system.
now when we create a roles then a profile will be generated.

this is up to my knowledge i had studied at some where not confident

A role is a name assigned to a single or group of tasks.
A role can have one or more profiles.
A profile is a group of activites.
Each profile can have atmost 150 authorizations.
If more than 150 auhorizations are assigned to a role then it automatically generates another profile.
